#5 Grow Your Mental Health: Reflection

Self-reflection can help you move forward…

This year’s theme for Children’s Mental Health Week (Feb 7-13) is Growing Together. It’s all about encouraging positive mental growth, reflecting on your own mental health growth and helping others to grow with you.

This week, we’ll be sharing 5 great ways to focus on your mental health growth – check in with us every day for a new self-help mini project including lots of great tips and advice to help you grow your mental health.

Day 5: Reflection

As we arrive at the last day of the Growing Your Mental Health campaign, it’s time to look back at how far we’ve come. It’s important to look back at our personal growth to see where we went wrong, what we did right, and what we can do to make things better in the future. This isn’t about beating yourself up for things you think you didn’t do right in life: this is an opportunity to look back at past decisions to help you work out where you want to be, and how you plan to get there.

How To Do Self-Reflection

There are lots of way you can practice self-reflection. Place2Be have a brilliant exercise called My Changing Shapes which helps you examine your past, present and future growth. This exercise helps you focus on what you’ve done in the past to let you see just how far you’ve come. It also helps you pinpoint where you want to make changes and how you can accomplish your goals. Check out the video below and give it a go!

Struggling to think of examples for your past, present and future diagram? Try asking yourself these questions – and be completely honest about your answers!

  1. What are my strengths?
  2. What’s a difficult situation I’ve managed to overcome?
  3. What are my weaknesses?
  4. What have I achieved?
  5. What would I like to be better at?
  6. What makes me happy?
  7. What makes me sad?
  8. What changes do I want to make in my life?
  9. What do I want to achieve in the future?

Once you’ve completed the My Changing Shapes exercise, you can keep your growth plan to look back on whenever you feel lost or negative about your past, present or future. Look at the amazing things you’ve achieved and the goals you have in life! You are special – you are ‘changing shapes’, adapting and overcoming all that life throws at you.
