Spots SOS!

Sort the rumours from the facts…

Troubled with spots? We bet you’ve had your fill of spot-related miracle cure stories and weird and wonderful suggestions on how to get rid of spots forever. Let’s sort the facts from the fiction!

Does Toothpaste Help Spots?

Many people swear by toothpaste for banishing a spot but it’s not the most effective way to treat a pimple. Sure, it can help to dry out the spot but it could irritate the already-sensitive area and make it worse. Stick to using toothbrush for your teeth and try an over-the-counter gel or cream containing benzoyl peroxide to treat blackheads and minor spots.

Spots Are Caused By Dirt

Another myth. Spots are actually caused by hormonal changes, not dirt. Natural skin oils mix with dead skin cells which plugs the pore, creating a pimple. So, spots are nothing to do with hygiene and everything to do with your hormones!

Does Chocolate Cause Spots?

There’s no definitive science to back this one up (and lots of clever scientists have argued over this for many years) so we’re going to have say “no” on this one. There’s no concrete connection between eating chocolate and getting spots.

Only Teenagers Get Spots

Not true. People of all ages can get acne for the first time but it’s more common in adolescents. For many people, spots arrive during puberty and can make you feel self-conscious, embarrassed, and even depressed. If acne is getting you down, please talk to someone about how you’re feeling and make an appointment with your doctor to get help.

Does Popping Pimples Make Them Go Away Faster?

Nope! In fact, this can make things worse and lead to scarring or even infection. Resist the urge to pick and keep your hands busy and away from your face. Cleanse your face gently and pat dry with a soft towel to avoid irritation.

Make-up Makes Spots Worse

It’s a myth that cosmetics make spots worse! You can use concealer and foundation to reduce and cover spots and redness but be sure to choose non-acnegenic make-up that’s gentle on your skin. If you’re not confident with make-up, there are lots of great YouTube tutorials you can watch to help you.
