Heading off to uni for the first time? We’ve got you covered! Whether you’re nervous about making new friends, anxious to make a good impression or excited to embrace the next step in your life, our Hidden Strength community has lots of great advice to help you on your way.
Grace found the best way to settle in was to join a society at her university. Take a look at what’s on offer at your campus and sign up to something that grabs your interest to meet up with like-minded people. You could be on your way to forging lifelong friendships!
It’s OK not to know absolutely everything – remember, we all have to start somewhere. So whether you’re looking for advice on a textbook or directions to your next class, don’t be afraid to speak up. Lloyd recommends asking for help when you need it and giving yourself time to get used to your new environment. Everything will soon fall into place!
Jacky agrees – joining a club is the way to go! Not only will it improve your social life, it’ll look great on your CV! Employers like to see extra-curricular activities listed on a CV because they demonstrate additional skills and a passion for learning new things.
Lynsey found a friend for life on her very first day of university. First days can be scary, but always remember that everyone else will be feeling just the same as you do. Crack a joke with the person next to you or smile and say hi to break the ice. Who knows, you might have just found your partner in crime for life!
Sometimes things just don’t go to plan and that’s OK. Try to put it behind you and move on – today is a new day! Colene had a turbulent start to her university life but she brushed it off, took a deep breath and jumped straight back in. Bravo, Colene!
Sound advice from Sarah! Remember, you are not alone in the way you’re feeling. Every single person around you is a bag of excited nerves. Almost everyone will be looking for a friendly face and to make a connection. Your new people are out there searching for you just as much as you are for them! Now, go find them and have fun!
