Get On Your Bike!

Cycle your way to wellness this Bike Week

Looking for a great way to get fit and improve your mental well-being? Then look no further! Cycling is a brilliant way to get started on your journey to better physical and mental health. There’s nothing as freeing as feeling the wind in your face as you cycle past beautiful country scenery.

This Bike Week, why not give cycling a go? Whether it’s travelling to and from school, college, uni or work, or hitting the gym for a spin on an exercise bike, you can put your foot to the pedal and cycle your way to well-being! Check out our ideas on how to fit cycling into your daily routine…

Why Not Try:

  • Ditching the car or bus you’d usually take every day and swapping it out for a cycle. You may have to plan a different route, depending on how suitable your journey is for a bicycle, so give yourself plenty of time to work out a safe alternative. You can find lots of great tips and advice for staying safe while cycling here.
  • Group cycling! Ask your mates to join you on a bike ride and explore a nearby route or beauty spot. Don’t forget to take a bottle of water and food if you’re heading out for the whole day.
  • A lunch-time cycle. If you’re fed up being at your desk all day long or have time during your lunch break, why not go out for a midday spin? It can really help to blow away the cobwebs, leaving you fresh and renewed for the rest of the day.
  • No bike? No problem! Many cities have public cycle-sharing schemes, or you could borrow a bike from a friend to get you started. You can also check out your local cycling shops – many of these offer bicycle hire.
  • Indoor cycling! Hit the gym and jump on an exercise bike for a quick blast of feel-good cycling. Try to cycle further every time or set yourself a goal before you begin. You’ll feel a great sense of achievement when you cross the ‘finish line’!
  • Join a cycling club! If you’d rather not cycle alone, why not consider joining a local club? Facebook is always a handy place to find local groups, or you can use this helpful online tool to find your closest group. If you’re particularly nervous or a cycling beginner, being part of a group can make you feel more supported and safer – plus it’s a great way to meet new people!
  • Get your family involved! Ask your family members to join you on a cycle. You can make a day of it and take a picnic along or cycle to your favourite restaurant or café for a spot of lunch and a well-deserved break.
